True silliness is forever

A long departed friend of mine has sometimes come to visit me in dreams, and he’s still just as wonderfully silly as ever.

But then tonight he figured out how to sneak into a ham radio repeater on a mountain…

So nobody was talking on the CARLA system again as is quite usual but suddenly I heard just the middle of some conversation about a Jeep pop on there then disappear just as suddenly. I keyed up the radio, said my call sign and let go of the button. There was no beep or squelch tail from the repeater.

But then he just pops right up.

“Hey again. Nice to see you. It’s really nice up here, better than that stuffy Castle Greyskull.”

His voice was kind of unmistakable.

I replied, “what are you doing up there?”

The response was a bit of laughter followed by the repeater controller saying “Link time out” as it turned off even though I’d just spoken on it.

So yeah, if you just heard all that oddness across the better part of California… That’s just an old friend being his ridiculous self.

This is not my first experience with ghosts sneaking into repeaters, by the way. It happens. Everyone who’s used the 147.150 in Miami has likely heard it happen too.
